9 Best Companion in Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is a post-apocalyptic world role-playing game from Bethesda Game Studios. It contains all the bells and whistles of any other Fallout game with some awesome additions like settlements and gun modification. What we’re here to talk about today, though, are the companions of Fallout 4. It’s a harsh wasteland, so there is little hope if you try to make it out alone. Everybody needs a buddy because, let’s face it, maybe the real adventure is the friends we make along the way. Here are the 9 Best Companions in Fallout 4 selected by yours truly.

Codsworth

Codsworth is the first friendly face you see coming out of the vault. He was your Mr. Handy before the war and is your Mr. Handy now. He sports a huge charisma of 16 and dishes out 10 each to perception and intelligence.

While he doesn’t come with any ‘official’ special skill or perk, there is a good chance he knows your name! Call yourself anything out of the hundreds of names in his database, and add a nice personal touch to your wasteland adventure!

To obtain Codsworth, you only need to head back and ask him nicely after helping out the Minutemen in Concord.

John Hancock

Just look at that hat! John Hancock is the ghoul Mayor of Goodneighbor. He is the most straight-talking, shootiest, and stabbiest friend you can have.

He has some pretty balanced stats with a notable 10 perception and agility. He will also help you out by gifting you chems every now and then (if you’re into that sort of thing).

To obtain John Hancock, you can either side with Fahrenheit in the quest ‘The Big Dig’ and then recruit him. If you decide to side with Bobbi No-Nose, you will have to complete another quest, ‘Recruiting Hancock’.

Preston Garvey

Another settlement needs your help! Aside from the repetitive banter, Minutemen leader Preston Garvey isn’t that bad to have around. He has some very well-balanced high-level stats and the ability to dish out some lovely side quests for more XP and more killing! Don’t forget to be a good boy around him or he will be very disappointed!

To obtain Preston Garvey, you must complete the quest ‘The First Step.’

Cait

Cait just loves to be bad. Even though she doesn’t like it when you are nice to people, she has much to bring. Apart from a 10 agility, her stats aren’t all that ‘special’, but she offers the ability to pick locks for you. This comes in handy if you are like me and can’t leave any stone unturned, with no exceptions.

To obtain Cait, kill all the raiders in the Combat Zone, then go up and have a little chat with her!

Piper Wright

Piper is just a really good all-round starting companion. She runs the Diamond City newspaper Publick Occurrences and loves to stir up a bit of trouble for the local authorities! Her stats give 10 each to perception, charisma, and agility, which can be useful.

What makes her so great at the beginning, though, is her relationship perk ‘Gift of Gab.’ With this perk, every location discovered or speech check passed grants another 100% XP. It’s not a bad early game if I say so myself!

To obtain Piper, complete the quest ‘Story of the Century

Curie

Who doesn’t want a hovering, murdering ambulance by their side? No one, that’s who. Curie is the medic of Vault 81 and a friend of you and me. Her stats are not great, if I’m honest, but her health starts a lot higher than anyone else in the early game.

Her big boost comes from those occasional stimpacks she likes to dish out. Those bad boys are expensive, and trust me; you are going to need a lot!

To obtain Curie, complete the quest Hole in the Wall.

Nick Valentine

Diamond City’s super-sleuth Nick Valentine can get to the bottom of any mystery. He is a great guy to have around, with some pretty decent stats. Coming in at 16 charisma and 10 agility makes him a solid all-rounder.

Even better, this half-synth can help you hack terminals. Get to know him even more, and he will give you a perk that allows for another go at hacking and a reduced cooldown for failed attempts.

To obtain Nick Valentine, you only have to hire him for 250 caps. Pass an easy speech check, and he’s all yours for 200 caps.

Paladin Danse

Squad leader and heavy hitter Paladin Danse is always there for you in a sticky situation. Coming out of the gate with power armor and energy weapons gives you the edge on the battlefield when you would normally be overwhelmed.

His equipment, matched with 10 perceptions and agility, gives no doubt that he has your back. Complete the quest ‘Call to Arms’ with him, and he will give you his unique laser rifle, Righteous Authority, which boosts critical hit damage by 100%.

To obtain Paladin Danse as a companion, simply begin the quest “Tour of Duty’.

Dogmeat

Now, this is one good boy. Dogmeat is the best pup when it comes to finding loot and pinning enemies down. Aside from 14 points to perception and agility, most stats are pretty low-level, meaning he will come to your rescue at the drop of a hat!

Dogmeat’s undying love for you means he will never judge you when it comes to helping or hindering the fine people of the Commonwealth, and he provides a V.A.T.S. accuracy bonus to whoever he sinks his teeth into.

Head to the Red Rocket Truck Stop to obtain Dogmeat and give this doggo some well-earned pats.

Strong

Last but not least is semi-civilized super mutant Strong. He loves big guns and killing; what’s not to like in a companion like that? Sporting a whopping 24 strength, Strong can carry up to 270 lbs. making those long, loot-filled trips even longer without having to return to a workshop.

He likes to gift the Sole Survivor various types of meat on your travels together, but it is probably best to leave him at home if you are planning on being stealthy. Give him a super sled, and you won’t need to join the fight, but try to get him to sneak, and he will blow your cover instantly.

To obtain Strong, talk to him after freeing him in the quest ‘Curtain Call.’

So there you have it: those are the 10 best companions of Fallout 4. Every one of them has some great attributes depending on your play style, so give them all a go to see what works best for you. For me, it’s all about the pats and bandannas for the best of boys, but hey, you might prefer to sink some jet with Hancock!
